Adults who thought their Lego days were long behind them find themselves playing with the colourful bricks once again. This time round, however, they have to draw on their skills as engineers to build giant models for Legoland Malaysia, writes CHUAH BEE KIM
KHAIRUNNADIA Kamarudin played with the colourful interlocking plastic bricks when she was about 6 or 7 years old.
She soon exchanged them for Barbie and Polly Pocket Dolls.
Now all grown up at the age of 23, and armed with a bachelor's degree in industrial design from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, she finds herself playing with the same bricks of her childhood.
Khairunnadia is set to be a model builder at Legoland Malaysia, which is expected to open in April 2012.
In 2012, Malaysia is all set to open up a new Legoland theme park. This announcement comes as a surprise, as the theme park will open up almost a year ahead of schedule. The park is said to cost around 700 million ringgit or 206 million dollars.
Arlida Ariff, who is the president and Chief officer for Iskander Investment Berhad , has reported that the park is slated to open in April 2012. The park is said to cover over 26 acres of land in the state of Johor and is located on the border shared by Singapore.
A 22-acre Legoland theme park under construction in Medini Iskandar in this area in southern state of Johor is expected to be ready by 2012, a year ahead of schedule, said Johor Chief Minister Abdul Ghani Othman. He said the theme park in Iskandar Malaysia would be the first in Asia, and the fifth in the world. "This Legoland park is built under a concept suitable to its location in a tropical country like Malaysia," he told reporters after attending the ground-breaking ceremony at the Legoland Malaysia project site, here Wednesday.

Iskandar Investment Berhad (IIB) president and chief executive officer Arlida Ariff said the theme park covering 26 hectares in Johor state is now slated to open in April 2012.
'The selection of Legoland is very deliberate. The (planned) theme park in Singapore by Universal Studios is for young adults. Our is for families. It will be complementary rather than competition,' she told AFP.
The Malaysian attraction will be the first Legoland in Asia.
IIB is an investment holding company linked to the 17.7 billion ringgit Iskandar Development Region (IDR), a major infrastructure project in Johor.
THE construction of a world-class premium factory outlet, better known as the Johor Premium Outlet, in Iskandar Malaysia will boost tourism and lure more investors into the state.
Iskandar Regional Development Authority (Irda) chief executive officer Harun Johari says the project, which was announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak in New York recently, would definitely attract tourists who are usually keen shoppers.
They will help boost revenue, he says.
“The Johor Premium Outlet is a strategic and catalytic project in Iskandar Malaysia and for the overall state of Johor. It will create a new market segment in tourism such as a luxury shopping destination,” he says.

Menjawab soalan Datuk Abdul Hamid Abdul Rahman (BN-Machap), Abdul Ghani berkata, wang berkenaan adalah bersifat 'sekali bagi' daripada pelabur Iskandar Malaysia dan tabungan SPF kini berjumlah RM50 juta, hasil sumbangan Iskandar Investment Bhd (IIB) selaku pemaju utama Iskandar Malaysia.
Katanya, IIB juga sudah memberikan komitmen sumbangan RM25 juta lagi untuk tabung berkenaan.
Construction of Asia's first Legoland theme park - a US$200 million project featuring 40 different rides and attractions - began yesterday at Iskandar Malaysia in Johor.
The 26-hectare Legoland Malaysia Resort, which will open its doors in 2012, is the centrepiece of the Medini North, a lifestyle development that will feature a retail mall, themed and business hotels, and office and residential spaces.
