Thursday, 17 Sept 2009 - The land reclamation for the road widening project along Lido Beach is being carried out in compliance with the environmental standards outlined in the Comprehensive Development Plan for South Johor Economic Region. The appointed contractor for the project submits a report to the Department of Environment (DOE) every month to ensure compliance to environmental guidelines.
Approvals of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) report and an Environment Management Plan (EMP) by the DOE were obtained before work commenced on-site.
All the DOE guidelines, including periodic water testing conducted every three months are being adhered to. Water quality test conducted in July (89.43 WQI) have shown a 10% improvement in quality in comparison to the water samples tested in May (79.17 WQI), prior to the commencement of reclamation works.
The improvement in water quality at the land reclamation site is attributed to the measures undertaken by IRDA in compliance to the requirements of the DOE approved EMP. These measures included pollution traps such as the Silt Curtain and stricter guidelines imposed on the IRDA appointed contractor, SJIC Bina.
These guidelines prevent the construction of temporary structures such as toilets and diesel storage tanks on-site. Construction of the Rock Revetment and Tidal Gates to prevent erosion, turbidity and contaminants from flowing into the sea are underway.
Balancing Iskandar Malaysia development with the environment is an integral part of IRDA’s mission. IRDA is focused on facilitating a development that is responsive to the environment, contributing towards the achievement of Iskandar Malaysia’s vision of a strong and sustainable metropolis of international standing.
