JOHOR BARU: Malaysia-Singapore bilateral ties are set to improve further when the republic sets up a consulate office here by year's end.
This is significant for Johoreans, as one of the aims of the move is to provide trade and investment advice to Singaporeans about business opportunities in the state, especially in Iskandar Malaysia.
Information on investment opportunities in Iskandar Malaysia is now only available from Iskandar Investment Bhd.
It is learnt that the Singapore high commission in Kuala Lumpur has earmarked Level 35 of the Johor Baru City Square office tower as the address of the consulate office.
It is expected to enter into a leasing agreement with tower developer Merit Properties soon.
A source close to the state government said the consulate office would also handle cases of Singaporeans who lost their travel documents and encountered immigration hassles in Malaysia, particularly in Johor, or became victims of crime and needed help.
"Trade and investment wise, the office will be a point of reference for Singaporeans who want to set up their business here or who are looking for trade opportunities.
"The office will work with the state government and agencies related to Iskandar Malaysia," the source said.
