Senai Airport Terminal Services Sdn Bhd (SATS) recently entered into an agreement with Qatar Airways for the airline to provide air freight services out of Senai Airport, Johor.
SATS is the owner of the Senai Airport.
SATS chief executive officer Datuk Mohd Sidik Shaik Osman said the routes served by the airline would be a boost for Johor-based manufacturers.
“The service will not only provide the air linkage for Johor-based cargo to Doha, but also to the rest of the Middle East, Europe and Africa on a twice weekly basis,” Mohd Sidik added.
Qatar Airway’s inaugural flight out of Johor to Doha left Senai Airport at 2.30am on Nov 12.
Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) sees 2010 and 2011 as the most challenging years for growth as the global economy should enter a recovery period after almost a year of recession.
Chief executive officer Capt Ismail Hashim said PTP is like any other port in the world and depended on the global trade activities and volumes.
He said in the last 12 months or so, all port operators had been operating in a very challenging business environment due to the economic downturn.
“We are doing quite well despite the unfavourable economic situation and for next year we are looking at double-digit growth,” Ismail told StarBiz recently.
He said in September and October, PTP registered a 3.4% and 5% increase in volume respectively compared with the same months last year.
The Tanjung Pelepas Port in Johor is poised to compete with Singapore for transshipment cargo, says Transport Minister Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat.
Major shipping lines like Maersk Line, Evergreen line and MISC line have switched their regional hubs to the port from Singapore, Ong said in his opening speech at the World Air Cargo Organization (WACO) International Conference here Monday.
Last year, the port handled 5.6 million TEUs with 97 per cent of them being transshipment cargo, he said.
"Besides air and sea, Malaysia is also increasingly important in terms of land bridge cargo where cargo can go from Malaysia by road to most of the neighbouring countries like Singapore, Thailand, Cambodia."
PETALING JAYA: Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP), the country’s premier transhipment terminal, is working towards increasing hinterland cargo volume to achieve a more sustainable business model, says chief executive officer Captain Ismail Hashim.
On average, PTP now handled 95% transhipment and 5% hinterland cargo, he said.
“We feel that we have to strike a better balance to achieve a more sustainable business model,” he told StarBiz via e-mail.
Development in Iskandar Malaysia, which included logistics, would in turn support hinterland cargo growth, he said.
“In this respect, PTP, along with its sister companies Johor Port and Senai Airport, will play complementing roles to further strengthen the logistics sector in Johor.

JOHOR BARU: An automated clearance system, initially introduced for investors coming into Iskandar Malaysia, is now open to all residents from Singapore.
Singaporeans travelling frequently between both countries can apply for the Malaysian Automated Checkpoint System (MACS) introduced five months ago, said Home Ministry secretary-general Datuk Seri Mahmood Adam.
The sticker costs RM30 yearly.
He said the authorities were confident this move would ease congestion at both the entry points at the Customs, Immigration and Quarantine Complex at Bukit Chagar and the Second Link.
With the system, Mahmood said it would take less than three seconds to go through immigration checks.
JOHOR BARU: All Singaporeans can now make use of the Malaysia Automatic Clearance System (MACS) at the Causeway, a privilege originally intended to speed up Immigration clearance for foreign investors in Iskandar Malaysia.
Those who register for the service at a cost of RM30 a year can clear Immigration in a matter of seconds.
Users will receive a sticker in their passports which is scanned upon entry and departure.
Home Ministry secretary-general Datuk Seri Mahmood Adam said all the 212 Immigration counters at the new Customs, Immigration and Quarantine Complex in the Sultan Iskandar building were equipped with the MACS.
